This hardwood is only slightly softer than ipe and features a similar reddish-brown appearance. When you want a premium hardwood look without the higher cost, cumaru can be an attractive option.

 

However, cumaru decking requires proper kiln drying to perform at its best. The wood can be more prone to shrinkage than ipe, so you need to prepare the material and install it properly.

 

In regions with very dry climates, this tendency to shrink may give you some extra challenges. Even so, its density and attractive appearance make it a popular decking material no matter where you are in the US.

 

 

Tigerwood – Bold and distinctive beauty

 

With tigerwood, you can build a visually appealing deck with a unique, exotic character.

 

Goncalo Alves or tigerwood makes your deck stand out with its striking orange-brown tones and dark contrasting stripes that create its signature ‘tiger’ appearance. You'll likely appreciate this type of wood more as it ages because those colors deepen into a richer reddish-brown shade.

 

Keep in mind that the striping patterns can vary significantly from one board to another, though, so you might find some boards with very little striping and others with bolder and highly visible patterns. This natural variation can make it more difficult to create a uniform appearance across your whole deck. But it can also add character to your outdoor space at the same time.

 

Surface traction is another consideration when installing a tigerwood deck. The wood’s smooth texture feels comfortable under bare feet, but it may become more slippery in certain situations.
