IPE Decking Installation Tips for Coastal and Humid Climates

Coastal and humid climates present unique challenges in ipe decking installation. Everything from high moisture levels to salt air and frequent weather changes can affect your decking material if you don’t handle it correctly.

 

Let the wood acclimate before installation

 

Before installing ipe wood decking, give your ipe decking boards a chance to acclimate to local conditions for at least seven days. This adjustment period helps the wood adapt to the temperature and humidity levels in your area.

 

Keep the boards protected from rain during this time, but avoid covering them with plastic sheets or tarps. Otherwise, you’ll trap moisture, and it will interfere with the acclimation process.

 

For better airflow, place the decking boards on wooden blocks and use wooden spacers between layers. This allows air to circulate around the material and helps keep the boards dry until your ipe decking installation day.

 

Leave enough spacing between boards

 

Proper spacing can significantly impact the long-term performance of your ipe deck. As with any natural wood product, ipe will expand and contract in response to environmental conditions. So, be sure to leave a gap of approximately 3/32 inch between deck boards to give the material room to move naturally while helping prevent issues later on.

 

The amount of shrinkage can vary depending on several factors, including:

·     Local climate conditions

·     Where you’re installing the ipe wood decking

·     How you’ll use the deck

 

As a general guideline, 4-inch boards may shrink by about 1/8 inch. Meanwhile, 6-inch boards can shrink by roughly 1/4 inch.

 

Additionally, make sure your ipe decking installation allows the wood to breathe. A well-ventilated deck stays more stable and is less likely to experience cupping or excessive movement. Ideally, you should allow at least 18 inches of open air beneath the joists and ensure that the deck design gets cross-ventilation from all sides.

 

Create proper drainage with the right deck pitch

 

Water management is especially important when you’re using ipe wood decking in coastal and humid environments. Without proper drainage, standing water can shorten the lifespan of your deck structure and contribute to moisture-related issues.

 

So make sure your deck substructure slopes away from the building to encourage water runoff. You can achieve this with a minimum pitch of 1/4 inch for every 10 feet.

 

When installing framing materials, position the crown upward to help water drain away from the decking surface. Because framing lumber can naturally vary in height, low spots may develop where water can collect.

 

You can also apply joist tape to add another layer of moisture protection to your ipe decking installation and help extend the life of the framing system.

 

It's also important to avoid installing hardwood decking directly over concrete. Concrete tends to retain moisture, which can affect the natural movement and stability of the wood over time.

 

Use high-quality fasteners designed for coastal environments

 

Because ipe is an extremely dense hardwood, it helps to pre-drill any penetrations before you install any fastener.  Make sure you use the correct drill bit size for the screws you select.

 

Always go for grade 305 stainless steel or higher to help prevent staining around screw locations on ipe wood decking. And for coastal installations, choose fasteners specifically designed to resist corrosion caused by salt air and moisture exposure. Hidden fastening systems are also worth considering if you want a cleaner appearance without visible screw heads on your ipe decking installation.

 

Seal the ends of the boards

 

Whenever you cut ipe wood decking during installation, make sure you seal the freshly exposed ends within 24 hours. This helps reduce moisture absorption through the end grain and supports the long-term stability of the wood.

 

Be careful not to apply the sealer to the walking surface of the deck. If you accidentally get product onto the face of the boards, wipe it off immediately to prevent unwanted residue or discoloration.
